a small crack on the top step.
Attaching a furring strip
with small screws through the plastic seems to have made it stable
again.

for the continuing posts on how to make minor fixes like this. Even though I might never have this exact problem (though I have a stool that looks just like this, so maybe I will!), I appreciate the emphasis on mending and making do. It's a very healthy counterbalance to our disposable consumer culture's general mindset, and helps inspire me to find ways to make my own little fixes to lengthen the lifespan of my stuff.
