Plywood or paint

The last touch to our range hood project was to make the ceiling pretty.

A long sheet of 1/4 inch plywood seemed like an easier option than painting.

I would think a coat of gloss or semi gloss paint would make it easy to wipe off cooking oils, etc. else those fumes/vapors will seep into the wood, no?
