According to this page, the sharp angular material is a good if expensive solution. The author of that page advises to use a geotextile as well. I think he has a point.

Geotextile to stabilise soil is a technique that is also used in dyke construction here in the Netherlands. Before geotextiles, woven mats of willow branches were used.
