Best way to start sweet potatoes?

When is the best time to start propagating sweet potatoes? The first week in April.

Moist gravel is our medium of choice, sunk half way down.

Our yields got a lot better when we started using a heat pad.

Fascinating - I have never seen this before! I thought you just plant them like regular potatoes. Can you post pictures as they sprout and what you do with them later? Thank you!

Whew! I thought this was some new recipe. It didnt look very appetizing, but as growing medium, very nice! :-) I wonder if one of those heated pet mats might work to warm the potatos. They only get to 110 degrees, use only 4 watts, and I believe only heat when pressure is applied ( ie, when the own of growing medium is placed in them. I had very abysmal, results last year too. This year, I have three jars set in a south facing windowsill, and two are starting to grow roots after about a week. Fingers crossed.

On a related topic, anybody ever grow purple potatoes? Do you know how well they store? I had some sprouty ones in the kitchen bin, so planted them on a whim.
